ANNY KA Tutor Interview

Q. Hi ANNY KA! Thank you for taking the time to do this interview. May we ask you to briefly introduce yourself?

A. Thank you so much for providing me with this wonderful opportunity to introduce myself on Cafetalk. I am an experienced English teacher from Great Britain, holding a PhD in English language and literature. With over 20 years of teaching experience in seven different countries around the world, I have had the privilege to work in various educational settings. Additionally, I have dedicated nearly a decade of my career to serving in international humanitarian and non-profit organizations.

While I possess expertise in public speaking and have worked within public relations (PR) agencies, teaching remains my foremost passion and primary focus.

Q. Please tell us more about your hometown and the area where you currently reside.

A. I am from Reading, located in the county of Berkshire, England, United Kingdom. It is 40 miles (64 kilometers) away from London and has around 230,000 inhabitants. Reading is often referred to as the 'Silicon Valley of the UK' due to its concentration of IT companies.

I have worked and lived in many different countries over the years, primarily as a native English teacher at various international universities. In the last four years, I have been living as a so-called 'digital nomad', currently residing in Florence, Italy. Living in the heart of Tuscany is the fulfillment of my long-held dream, and I plan to stay here as long as possible.

Q. What motivated you to become a tutor on Cafetalk?

A. I have never had the opportunity to work with Japanese people, and regrettably, I have never visited Japan. However, my fascination with Asian cultures, particularly Japanese, has been a driving force to apply on Cafetalk. Over the past four months, I've had an extraordinary experience, meeting more than 70 individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Each encounter has allowed me to delve into their stories, understand their aspirations, and appreciate the significance of English in their lives.

Q. What are you usually up to when you're not teaching on Cafetalk? What are your hobbies and interests?

A. When I'm not teaching on Cafetalk, you'll often find me pursuing my passions for travel, cooking, writing, and music. Over the past 30 years, I've been fortunate enough to explore all continents and many countries, which has greatly enriched my understanding of different cultures and peoples.

Cooking is another passion of mine, and I love experimenting with flavors and recipes from around the world. In fact, my culinary adventures have inspired me to start collecting cookbooks from all around the world.

Additionally, I have a deep appreciation for art and music. I sing in a classical music choir, where I find joy and connection through music-making with fellow enthusiasts. Whether it's exploring a new destination, whipping up a delicious meal, putting pen to paper, or harmonizing with my choir mates, I'm constantly seeking out opportunities to engage with the world and express myself creatively.

Q. A lot of students are probably curious about the atmosphere in your lessons. What can a student imagine a lesson with you to be like? What’s your teaching style?

A. In my lessons, students can expect an atmosphere that's both dynamic and structured, reflecting my experience, energy, and confident teaching style. I've been described as an extroverted and charismatic teacher, and I bring that energy into every session.

My teaching approach is quite dominant, yet supportive. I believe in taking charge of the lesson while also empowering students to actively participate and engage in the learning process. Clients often feel they are in safe hands with me, knowing that I provide clear guidance and direction towards achieving their language goals.

I strive to create an environment where students feel encouraged to take risks, make mistakes, and ultimately grow in their language proficiency. Whether it's through interactive activities, stimulating discussions, or targeted exercises, my goal is to ensure that every student leaves my lesson feeling confident and motivated to continue their language journey.

Q. Which lessons would you recommend to your students?

A. Each type of lesson I offer serves a distinct purpose, tailored to meet the diverse needs of my students. Whether it's a business English session, vocabulary enrichment, discussions on native-speaker grammatical nuances, public speaking practice, or exam preparation, each lesson is meticulously planned with clear objectives in mind.

I ensure that materials are carefully prepared to align with the specific goals of the lesson, whether it's enhancing professional communication skills, expanding vocabulary, refining grammatical accuracy, honing public speaking abilities, or achieving success in international language exams. My approach is always goal-oriented, aiming to provide students with the necessary tools and strategies to excel in their language learning journey.

Q. Finally, would you like to leave a message for your current and future students?

A. To my current and future students,
I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for choosing me as your English teacher. It's a privilege and honor to accompany you on your language learning journey. For those of you who are already part of my classes, thank you for your trust and dedication.
