SELF INTRODUCTION
Hi, I’m Mike! I’m an American originally from the southeast, and I’ve spent close to a decade living and teaching in Japan on and off — so I know firsthand what it’s like to learn a language while actually living in it.
I teach English at all levels, from everyday conversation to business communication and Eiken exam prep. I also offer Japanese lessons for advanced learners working toward JLPT N3 through N1 — I’m N1 certified myself and am currently working through Kanken, so I’ve been through the grind and know what actually works.
Outside of language, I teach music theory and songwriting as well as fermentation — things like miso, koji, kimchi, sourdough, hot sauce. If that sounds like an unusual combination, well, that’s just how my life has gone, and I think it makes for more interesting lessons.
My teaching style is goal-oriented but flexible. I like to know what you’re actually working toward so we can make real progress together, and I check in regularly to make sure what we’re doing is genuinely useful to you. For conversation especially, I find that structured topics are the best way to push past comfort zones and build vocabulary that you’ll actually use — not just chatting in circles.
Whatever brought you here, feel free to send me a message before booking if you want to talk through what you’re looking for!
