Hi, I’m Dr. Frank D, an educator for over 30 years. I can help you improve your English, no matter what level you are, and I can also help you understand American culture.

Here are the things I do with my students to help them improve their English:

—look at a picture and describe what you see

—talk about:

…movies, anime, books, short reading passages, haiku, YouTube videos, TED talks 

—supplement with journaling

— about the things you do and see in everyday life

— about the things you think about now and then

— about the things you would like to say in English but cannot easily do so 

We practice for fluency and for accuracy, learning new words.


My family and I lived in Japan for almost ten years, and I taught Japanese adults and teens for another fifteen years after that. I speak and read Japanese at an intermediate level. After moving back to the US, I helped scores of my Japanese coworkers successfully adapt to life in America, so I know what is difficult to understand and how to help others communicate effectively.
 
Education & Training : Ph.D. in Education; MA Educational Technology; TOEFL certification. I worked in a Japanese juku for 19 years.
 
I love teaching! More importantly, I love helping people learn. I have a Ph.D. in education, so I know just how to help you keep growing in your ability to communicate well. I love Japan, Japanese people and Japanese culture - for 50 years now. For ten years, I also traveled extensively: Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Haiti, Toronto, Accra, Nairobi, all over Tanzania. I was born for this - to help people to improve their understanding of culture and communication, and to make new or stronger connections.
 
I have a background in cultural anthropology, so I am able to help people learn about what makes another culture tick, and how they can understand and appreciate it.
 
Learning is a life-long journey. I can help you learn how to learn - more effectively, with joy! Together we can create learning experiences which lead to improvements in your insight and skills. I'm good at this and we have fun along the way. Let’s learn about life, together!
