Hello, everyone! My name is Marisa, I'm 26 years old, and I'm from New York City! My major in college was International Studies in East Asia, with a focus on Mandarin Chinese.
While I was about 10 years old, a classmate of mine brought manga (Sailor Moon) to school one day. I instantly fell in love with the art style. Since then, I've always been curious about Japanese language and culture.
My teaching style is mostly conversational, but I also make sure that students practice reading and learn new words at the same time. Students are typically more calm and confident speaking English when they're talking about things they're interested in. If there's any topic you'd like to chat about during a lesson, don't hesitate to mention it! I never want students to feel bored or stressed.
I spent 1 year teaching English in Mainland China (2018-2019) to students aged 3-14 years old. The job made me realize 1.) that teaching is an extremely rewarding job, and 2.) that I would love to become a mom someday. The little kids had a profound effect on my heart, and I miss them very much.
Fun fact: I met my husband in China! We both worked for the same company in different parts of the city we lived in. He's from Quebec, Canada, where I'm currently living now. We've been married since January, 2021! xoxo
I also spent 1 year teaching English in a cram school in Kaohsiung, Taiwan (2019-2020), mainly to middle school kids. I helped them prepare for the English section of their high school entrance exams. I was also introduced to online teaching while in Taiwan.
I'm very friendly and patient, so don't worry about making mistakes. Unfortunately, making mistakes is the best way to learn English. I hope that we can create a cultural bridge during our lessons. See you in class! :)
