Hello! Nice to meet you. My name is Joy. I am from the United States but am currently living in Japan. I have been teaching English for eight years. I have been interested in languages ever since I was a child. I love solving them like a puzzle. I also love that moment when a new part of the puzzle is understood! I hope I can create that moment with you.
I have been an English teacher for eight years working in a day care, elementary school, junior high school, university, retirement language club, and online. Over the years I have taught people from six different countries from the ages of 2 to 82 with English proficiency between zero and near-native. I have a degree in Linguistics and Japanese as well as teaching certification. I taught as a local government ALT for five years. I have experience teaching language and culture in both English and Japanese.
With personal experience studying languages, I know how hard it can be. It can be hard to choose your goals, see the progress you are making, and know how best to study. That is why I have developed a technique to address these issues. I like to first identify what kind of learner you are (auditory, visual, kinesthetic). Then we can pinpoint some concrete goals to build upon. Goals could be anything from having a simple everyday conversation to being able to discuss your ideas persuasively at a corporate meeting. Finally, we can create mile markers to be able to see the progress being made. From there, we can adjust the lessons to how you learn best.
Now, let’s start learning! We can create a study plan for you, or we can just take a few classes for specific interests. If you are not sure where to start, I suggest you take a “Counseling Lesson”. If you have a more concrete idea of your goals and level, please choose one of the other courses that I offer. I am looking forward to meeting you and working on creating the learning experience that is the most rewarding for you!
