Moon Over Bourbon Street! I'd live in New Orleans

주간 토픽: Which city would you like to try living?

Jack Detroit

This week's Tutor Column topic is a city I would like to live in. I am very lucky to have lived in several amazing cities. When I travel, I like to explore the history, culture, and food of the places I visit. For these reasons, I would love to live in New Orleans!

New Orleans in a city in Louisiana (a State) which is deep in the American South. It is SO far south, it is at the mouth of the Mississippi River at the Gulf of Mexico. New Orleans is famous for its diverse people and communities. And it is the birthplace of jazz and the blues. Because of its long history and rich cultural mix, its cuisine is very unique. Its most famous dish is probably jambalaya, a spicy stew made with rice, local vegetables, and pork or shrimp.

Because New Orleans is so old, it has contributed a lot to America's history. You can see it in its buildings, its streets, and in textbooks. Its suburbs have large, multi-storey mansions which used to manage plantations but are now homes along the streets. And inside the city is an ancient neighborhood called Bourbon Street, famous for its live music and bars.

Three interesting facts about New Orleans:
1. It had the first opera in US history, Sylvain by Ernest Gretry, in 1796.
2. It's the most haunted city in the United States
3. Its cemeteries have above-ground tombs. They don't have traditional graves.
