Learn English With Phrasal Verbs

Kara Bird

Learning phrasal verbs is one of the most difficult parts of studying English, but also one of the most essential!

Mastering phrasal verbs will help you understand conversations in English and speak naturally with English speakers.

Today I would like to introduce to you five common phrasal verbs:

1. to nod off: to fall asleep, especially briefly
I was so tired after the exam that I nodded off on the couch.

2. to bump into (someone): to meet someone by chance
On my way home from work, I bumped into Sophie. I was so surprised, because I haven't seen her for ten years!

3. to look up to (someone): to respect someone
I really look up to my older brother because he's very kind, successful and brave.

4. to get along with (someone): to have a good relationship
She is so funny and friendly, she gets along well with everyone.

5. to come naturally (to someone): to be natural and easy for someone to do
French comes naturally to her. She never studies but she still passes all her tests.

Now, it's your turn!
  • Have you ever nodded off in an important meeting?
  • Have you ever bumped into an old friend in an unexpected place?
  • Who do you look up to?
  • Do you get along with your co-workers?
  • Is there a skill that comes naturally to you?
Here are some tips for learning phrasal verbs:
1. Write down phrasal verbs that you see in books or hear in movies. Even better, write the whole sentence  - this will help you understand the context in which native speakers use the phrasal verb.
2. Find out the meaning by talking to a native speaker or looking in a dictionary. Some dictionaries also have example sentences to help you use the words correctly.
3. Practice using the phrasal verb in conversation and/or writing.
4. Review regularly.
