Should your ultimate goal be to sound like a native speaker?

Senka

From my experience as an English tutor, it seems like most of my students would like to eventually reach a level of English proficiency where they sound exactly like a native speaker. I will share my common response to these students later on but for now let me pose a question: Does sounding like a native speaker have that many advantages over someone who doesn't quite have a "native" accent but excels at communication?

To be honest, there may be some scenarios or circumstances in which having a native accent may be beneficial. There are probably some jobs that really value people who speak a language just like a native.

But let's not forget what language is all about: COMMUNICATION. I've encountered many instances of non-native speakers that were able to communicate more effectively than their native-speaking counterparts. Demonstrating the ability to communicate your ideas with the use of flawless grammar, eloquent vocabulary, and the proper use of expressions, is the most important dimension of communication.

So rather than devoting your precious time getting that perfect native accent, focus on spending time on materials and lessons that will turn you into an effective communicator.
