The Midwest is home to Lake Michigan, one of the Great Lakes settled in between Canada and the United States. While we don't live near any oceans, people who live around Lake Michigan frequent the beaches along its shore during the summer.
Here's a map of the Great Lakes.
Just at the bottom of Lake Michigan, one beachfront stands out from the rest.
The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is home to multiple beaches dotted across the shore of Indiana.
In 1926, the Indiana Dunes opened to the public as a state park, and in 2019 it was recognized as a national park.
When people visit the Indiana Dunes, they're greeted by golden beaches with rolling hills of greenery and sand.
A "dune" is actually a mound of sand formed by wind, and there are a lot of these when you visit here!
The Dunes are an extremely popular spot for locals and tourists alike during the summer, so some beaches require a fee to enter. The beach above, however, is free! I think it looks really nice for a free beach!
You can also drive your boats and jetskis here, but it was pretty calm the other day.
Around the beach, you can find all sorts of animals. Some of the most common are chipmunks, bats, and squirrels. Interestingly enough, I didn't see any of those.
I saw a family of ducks instead.
I think two of them are loners, haha.
If you ever think of traveling to Chicago during the summer months, I highly recommend checking out the Indiana Dunes for a beach day. Since it's a national park, the beaches are very clean and great for families!
