Resolutions and Goals for 2022 (Check for a special message at the end!)

Weekly Topic: New Year's resolution

Lisa D.

What is a resolution?

Well, one dictionary definition says, “a firm decision to do or not to do something.”  Some synonyms (or similar words) for ‘resolution’ are courage, purpose, sincerity, and willpower.

The history of New Year’s Resolutions:

4000 years ago, it is recorded that the ancient Babylonians were some of the first people to make New Year’s resolutions.  They had a 12-day religious festival and either crowned a new king or reaffirmed their loyalty to the reigning king.  They believed that if they completed their New year’s resolutions, their god would give them favor and blessing for the next year; however, if they did not complete their resolutions, their god would not give them blessings but instead give them curses and bad luck for the next year.

In today’s society, many people make resolutions to themselves, not to the gods, and they want to improve themselves.

For me, instead of making resolutions every year which I might not be successful with, I make a list of short-term (3 months), medium-term (6 months), and long-term (1 year) goals.  I find I am more successful by making goals that build upon each other.

Some of my short-term goals for 2022:

·      To learn 100 new Spanish vocabulary words

·      To lose 6 kilograms

·      To read 6 books

Some of my mid-term goals for 2022

·      To be able to have basic conversations in Spanish with native speakers

·      To lose a total of 10 kilograms

·      To read a total of 12 books

Some of my long-term goals for 2022

·      To be able to have complex conversations in Spanish with native speakers

·      To lose a total of 18 kilograms

·      To read a total of 18 books

It is important to me to know “Why am I wanting to complete these goals at this time in my life?”

Why do I want to learn Spanish?
My son’s girlfriend, Jessica, and her family speak fluent Spanish and I want to be able to converse with them in their language.

Why do I want to lose weight?
To make me feel better and gain more health this year.

Why do I want to read so many books?
I like to read and I like to learn many new things.  I will try to read a variety of books so that I can increase my knowledge of many new things.

What’s your goal for this year? Do you want to read more, gain new vocabulary, or maybe learn something new that you have never thought about?  Take a lesson and let's explore something new this year.

I had no motivation during the winter. But after reading your column, I'm feeling motivated at last and I could finally make resolutions and goals for 2022. I also set goals in three periods like you. My answers for your questions are here. No.1: Your son's girlfriend is Jessica! No.2: You decided to learn Spanish harder to communicate with Jessica and her family without stress. I want to speak English more fluently without hesitation this year!!

    Hi Lisa,
Thank you for sharing your idea!
I will also think of my short, middle and long term resolutions!
Seems like it is more realistic to achieve!

Hi Lisa-sensei, I can't agree with you more!
Here are my answers of your 2 questions:

What is my son's girlfriend's name?
    A: Jessica

Why do I want to learn Spanish?
A: Because you want to be able to converse with Jessica and her family in their language.

    See you soon!
