Mount Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe; it is located on the east coast of Sicily and is one of the most active volcanoes in the globe.
Etna is also one of the most studied and monitored volcanoes in the world. It is important for scientific and cultural purpose, also for volcanology, geophysics and other earth science disciplines.
According to the myth, the ashes and lava eruptions of the volcano would be the fiery 'breath' of the giant named Enceladus. Enceladus is one of the Giants, sons of Gaea and Uranus.
Enceladus took part in the Gigantomachy, the battle between the Giants and the gods of Olympus: with the help of his brothers, he planned to attack Olympus and challenge the power of Zeus. They wanted to conquer Mount Olympus.
The Giant intended to build a tower of mountains to reach the top of the sacred mountain. To help him ascend to heaven, he placed the peaks of the highest mountains one on top of the other, such as Mont Blanc, the Asian mountains, the Pindus of Greece, but they were not enough to reach Olympus.
In order to stop him, Zeus struck him with lightning. The stones of Mount Etna fell on Enceladus, who was buried. Angry, the Giant began to get crazy, expelling fire and flames from his jaws. This is an important legend in Sicily and this giant is a symbol of the Mount Etna.
