There are two words that Canadians are famous for, “eh?” and “sorry”. Lots of t-shirts, hats, postcards, and other Canada-themed souvenirs feature these words, and they are the subject of many jokes as well (especially in America). I guess I’m super Canadian, because I use both of these words a lot. However, some people wonder if the word “sorry” still means “sorry” or if it’s just an empty word that people use to appear polite. I’m sure that’s true in some cases, but “sorry” has many meanings and uses. It can be an apology, it can mean “excuse me”, it can mean “pardon me?” or “please say that again”, it can express surprise or shock, and, depending on the intonation, it can even mean “I’m not sorry!” But whatever it means, it’s still a very important word to use in Canada.
