Advice or advise?

The words, 'advice' and 'advise' are commonly confused. Even though the spelling is almost identical, it's important to understand that its meaning and pronunciations are different. The word 'advice' acts as a noun and 'advise' acts as a verb.

Advice

Advice 
is an uncountable noun. It's pronounced with an /s/.
It means an 'opinion, recommendation or suggestion by someone that you do something in a certain situation'.

How to use it? 

Advice 
is commonly followed by the prepositions 'about' or 'on'. For example, You need my advice about advice.

We often use advice with the verbs 'give' and 'take'. For example, My friend gave me some relationship advice, but I didn't take it.

You can 'do something on someone's advice'. For example, On my father's advice I became a teacher.

Advice can be followed by an infinitive verb. For example, My advice is to call the doctor first thing in the morning.

To make advice countable, use 'a piece of' - a piece of advice. For example, I have three pieces of advice for you: brush, floss and use mouthwash.

Advise

Advise
 is a regular verb. It is pronounced with an /z/.
It means 'give
 advice' or 'give someone a suggestion opinion or recommednation as to what they should do in a certain situation'.

How to use it? 

Advise commonly uses the prepositions 'on' or 'about'. For example, I will advise you on advise.

You can 'advise something'. For example, When working with lions I advise fear. 


You can 'advise someone to do something'. For example, My father advised me to choose a different career.

You can also 'advise someone against doing something' or . For example, I advise against making any sudden movements. 

Finally, you can 'advise that'. For example, Circus masters advise that people stop disturbing lions.
