5 English idioms related to graves

Zach McLaughlin

Halloween conjures feelings of fear and images of graves, bones, and monsters, so from now until the 31st, I’ll be sharing some English idioms associated with these themes. Let’s start with 5 idioms about graves.

as quiet/silent as a/the grave

Meaning: totally silent

Example: “Even though she tried to listen out for the sound of a returning car, the castle and the road leading up to it remained as silent as the grave.” (The castle and road were totally silent - there was no sound of a returning car or anything else.)

to carry/take a secret to the/one’s grave

Meaning: to keep a secret for the rest of one’s life; to never reveal a secret for as long as one lives

Example: “Houdini took his secrets to the grave, as he died shortly after performing one of his most famous escapes.” (Houdini never revealed the secrets of his tricks - he died before revealing them to anyone.)

to dig one’s own grave

Meaning: to do something foolish that causes one to fail or be ruined

Example: “When Charlie Sheen lost his mind in 2011, he dug his own grave and lost his job as the highest paid actor on television.” (Through his actions, Charlie Sheen ruined his own career.)

to turn/roll over in one’s grave

Meaning: used to express the opinion that something would have caused anger or distress in someone who is now dead

Example: “Your poor mother would roll over in her grave if she heard the horrible things you were saying about your sister.” (If your mother weren't dead, she would be very upset to hear what you’re saying.)

from beyond the grave

Meaning: after death

Example: “In the final arc of the final season, Yoda hears Qui-Gon Jinn speaking to him from beyond the grave.” (In Star Wars, although Qui-Gon Jinn's character is dead, his ghost speaks to Yoda.)

That's all for now! Next time, we'll look at 5 idioms related to fear. See you then!
