Are video games good for learning English?

2023-01-22

Video games are a part of everyday life for both children and adults. People play them because they are fun, interesting or help relieve stress. Did you know that video games are also good for what’s inside your head? According to recent research, playing videos games or “gaming” is beneficial for your brain.

That’s great news, but can gaming be used as a way of improving your English?

Absolutely! Many people now regularly play in order to expose themselves to English, either so they can speak better about the games they like, or to boost their overall English skills.

If you have children, you know they love video games. But you want them to study, too, don’t you?

I can help you put the two together!

In my English Arcade lessons, we play games which:

  1. Are not fast, so there is no stress from having to make quick decisions
  2. Do not feature violence
  3. Require basic problem-solving skills (you have to use your brain!)

There are many expressions we use with the characters in video games that we can use in real life, too.

For example, in many games we have to open things or move left/right/forward, etc., move things, take things, push or pull things, talk to people, climb, get and pick up things, to name a few

These are everyday actions. Therefore, we can learn everyday English.
