Greeting in Taiwanese Mandarin

2023-09-03

In Taiwan, when we greet we say:
Hāi = Hi
Hā luō =Hello
The above two are direct transliterations from English to Chinese.

3.你好Nǐ hǎo*

When we greet in the morning, we say:

1.早Zǎo = Morning
2.早安Zǎo ān = Good Morning

My student asks me why is "早安"?
What is "安" meaning?

Good morning, morning, peace and safety.
平安 Peace and safety
(For my personal, I think it also means that I wish you peace and safety the whole day.)

中午:
午安Wǔ ān = Good afternoon.

That's interesting at night when we greet, "晚安" is said before we go to bed.
Therefore, you just say, "Hi", "Hello", or "How are you today?" when you meet your friend at night in Taiwan.

Before going to bed:
晚安Wǎn'ān = Good night
