Malaysia celebrated her 60th anniversary on 16 September 2023. The Keretapi Sarong 2023 (KS2023) event was one of many held to celebrate her birthday. Thousands of Malaysians joined the festivities thronging designated train stations dressed in colourful sarongs and traditional costumes. This year's theme was 'Ethnicity'. It was a celebration of our origins, embracing diversity and the public transportation that brings us all together.

Let the pictures here do the talking!

The revellers were led by organisers in sing-alongs to evergreen favourites like folksongs Rasa Sayang and Chan Mali Chan. People were more than game to join a flash mob and dance the Joget Lambak.

Last year, the theme for KS22 was 'Retro'. You are all invited to join in the celebration for KS24. Whatever the theme is, you know you're in for a massive good time. Bring your kain sarong!

As if to showcase the diversity that thrives among us, not too far away was another event: Save Malaysia! This was a protest against the Discharge Not Amounting to Acquittal (DNAA) verdict of a politician. As a result, the term DNAA is on everyone's lips, more proof that taking an interest in any subject is bound to enrich your vocabulary.

Happy Malaysia Day!

Postscript added on 8 Oct 2023: Note: Thank you to those who have written to let me know you enjoy reading my column but daren't take a lesson because there are parts you don't really understand. I assure you we'll always speak at a level which suits you so that we can enjoy a casual conversation. Also, we can go through words and sentences that are difficult so that we learn together. Perhaps, they will be easy then and we'll always have something to talk about. No stress!
