What is this "Gating"?

So, we all know what a gate is. It's basically a door, right? Can we use it as a verb?
 
Gating is a whole different thing!
 
Here are the definitions found in the dictionary:
  • confining (a pupil or student) to school or college.
  • an action, process, or mechanism by which the passage of something is controlled.
In fact, "Gating" is a technical term often used in the fields of science. Wikipedia has almost two dozen ways to define this simple term. We encounter this popping up in the tech world now, as companies are notorious for gating new features behind a paywall. In a literal sense, it's a gate between the user and the feature. It's also common for budget gadgets to have some sort of gating, even if they possess the required specifications, which makes them distinguishable from the high end.
