How to improve your English this year

Ben Proctor

Is your goal in 2024 to improve your English?

If so, here are my top tips for making 2024 the best year of your language journey.

#1
Reduce your daily study

"Hang on, shouldn't I be studying more??" I hear you ask. In fact, I think most people are too ambitious with their study plans.

1 hour a day is a big commitment for most people, so my recommendation is to make it 15 minutes a day. This makes it seem easier, and getting started is the main problem most people face. Once your started, you will probably study for more than 15 minutes anyway. Make it a small commitment.

#2
Think Long-Term

A lot of us are frustrated when we don't see quick improvement. But language learning, like any worthwhile skill, takes time.

Focus on making small improvements and celebrate the journey. Language learning is a process to be enjoyed, not a means to an end.

#3
Find a community

Finding other people to help you on your journey is such a big motivation boost for most people.

Whether it's teachers or fellow students, finding people and connecting with them make your journey more enjoyable and creates a stronger commitment.

#4
Make concrete goals

A lot of my students tell me "I want to be fluent". And that's great, but how can we measure fluency?

Goals are great when we can measure them. Some ideas for this are: 'I want to learn 1000 new words this year' or 'I want to get X score on X test'. This way you can track your progress and have something to aim towards.

#5
Be Kind to Yourself!

This one is so important. Be kind to yourself. Sometimes you will not be able to study as much as you want, sometimes you will feel like you're not making much progress. THIS IS OKAY.

Improving at a language (or anything) is never straighforward. Like a journey there will be twists, turns and obstacles to overcome. This is normal. Be kind to yourself if you fall off your studies. Start again and stay positive.

And that's it!

I hope you found some of these tips helpful. Of course, if you'd like help with your English journey, I'd be more than happy to help you! Check out my lesson below.
