Hello Everyone! This is a column about the weekly topic which is games and activities for students. There are SO MANY games and activities that students can do from role-play and board games, to races and puzzles. But I wanted to list some fun and productive games and activities for adult students in private lessons (so no other classmates) since that’s the majority of lessons that everyone here on Cafetalk likes to take. Below are 3 of my picks for fun games to play that will improve your English (or other language if you choose!)
1) Describe and Guess
- The objective of the game is to have person A think of something and describe it without naming it. Person B has to guess as they are given more and more details about the object or idea. Once Person B has guessed correctly, they switch roles.
- This is great for one-on-one lessons because it improves your vocabulary, description skills and listening.
2) Word Association Chain
- The objective of this game is like most chain games and we can change it to be a sentence chain/story chain as well. The object of word association though is for person A to pick a word and Person B then has to pick another word that is associated in meaning (For example: A: Pizza B: Cheese A: Dairy B: Cow A: Farm and so on.)
- This game is great for improving your thinking speed and encouraging you to get quicker about retrieving vocabulary (and you will also probably learn new vocabulary at the same time).
4) Memory Challenge
- This game can be played with one or more participants. The teacher (or a student if it’s not one-on-one) picks a list of words (depending on your level) that are related to one topic. The student reads the list of words and tries to remember as many as they can within a limited time (set by the teacher) and then the words disappear. The student then has to recall as many of the words as possible. For more of a challenge, the teacher can have the student make sentences with all of the words they can remember (and make sentences as homework with the words they don’t remember too!).
- This is great to encourage vocabulary recall while building associations and learning words for specific topics of discussion. The challenge issue (having the words taken away) is shown to really help with memorization.
