Interviewers normally signal the close of the session with this, "Do you have any question for us?" And do not worry. This really is not a trick question.
Your Interview Takeaway Points
Indeed, you want to impress the interviewers so that they offer you a job. However, there is information which is also important to you. If you have had a good interview conversation, chances are you will come away with a better appreciation of the following:
- Career progression and up-skilling opportunities
- Training opportunities: formal and informal
- Immediate challenges of the job
- Job description and the environment of the organisation
As much as organisations apply the job interview as a key tool to look for suitable candidates, do also consider it as an opportunity for you to assess if you want to work for it. Thus, if any of the above areas were not covered, there is no harm in your asking.
How Much are You Paying Me?
Assessing the company you work for also includes considering its compensation structure. However, when is the right time to ask about the job remuneration package?
Most companies would have a Human Resources personnel present to brief you on the general details of the package and employment benefits. If you were attending a preliminary interview, I would encourage you not to make it your priority to go into details of remuneration yet. Leave that for the later stages.
After all, your letter of offer will include all of these details for you to review before signing. Besides, you are more than likely to have completed a job application form and indicated your expected salary. If it becomes a point of negotiation, the company will certainly discuss it with you.
Make Every Interview Your Best!
Do attend as many interviews as you can. You will find yourself getting more confident. I am sure you will also discover your genuine voice as you progress. Enter the interview session with curiosity and confidence. Make every one your best shot. Treat each interview as a chance to sharpen your skills, showcase your potential, and truly assess where you would thrive.
I hope this series on job interview questions has been useful. If there is any question you would like me to cover, drop me a message. I would love to hear from you on any aspect of this series.
All the best to you.
