Sweet Treasures from South Africa: Local Candies You Need to Try!

Teacher Marinka

South Africa is a melting pot of cultures, and that diversity extends deliciously into our local sweets and candies. If you ever visit—or just want to explore new tastes—here are some treats you might love!

?? Wilson's Toffees
These chewy delights are a staple in every South African childhood. Flavors range from original creamy to fruity versions. You’ll often find a few in grandparents' candy bowls!

?? Fizzer
A stretchy, fizzy taffy candy made by Beacon. Fizzer is a favorite among school kids and comes in many fruity flavors like strawberry, grape, and cream soda. The fun part? You can freeze them for an extra chewy treat.

?? Peppermint Crisp
This chocolate bar is made with a minty, crystal-like filling that crunches when you bite into it. It’s so loved that it’s used in a traditional South African dessert called Peppermint Crisp Tart.

?? Koeksisters
Though technically more of a pastry, this syrup-drenched, braided doughnut is iconic. Spicy, sticky, and sweet—it's perfect with tea.

?? Honeycomb (Crunchie)
Made from sugar and golden syrup, this brittle candy is aerated to give it a crunchy, melt-in-your-mouth texture. Often dipped in chocolate and sold as “Crunchie” bars.
