Learning in Context

Weekly Topic: Recent minor failures and things I learned from them

Ann K

When I first began to learn Russian, which is very different from English, I tried to memorize all the case endings. Russian has six cases with changing endings for nearly all nouns and adjectives. At first, they seemed overwhelming!  In the end, I realized that learning in context was the best method. Today, I read and listen to podcasts in Russian.  Based on this natural exposure to the language in context, the case endings are now much easier for me.

As a teacher, I also rely on context.  My lessons focus upon a theme (i.e. Travel) and present words and expressions in context (for example, in natural dialogues).  My students remember their English because of the magic of context.
