Chinese idiom 刻舟求剑

Jessica H

“Hi everyone! Today we’re exploring a classic Chinese idiom — 刻舟求剑, which means ‘marking the boat to look for a sword.’
This story comes from ancient China: a man accidentally dropped his sword into a river while crossing by boat. Instead of thinking about how the boat and water were moving, he carved a mark on the side of the boat, hoping to find the sword later in the same spot! Of course, the sword had drifted away.
The moral of this idiom is about not clinging to old methods or rigid thinking when situations change. It reminds us to stay flexible, adapt to new circumstances, and make decisions based on the present moment.
Keep watching as I share the full story and show you how to use 刻舟求剑 in daily life!”
