What My Students Taught Me This Year ????

Aliia Askarova

This year I learned an important lesson as a teacher: I am definitely not the only one doing the teaching. Sure, I teach English, but my students have secretly been teaching me Japanese 101 in return ??. Every week I leave the classroom with new expressions, most of which I proudly use and occasionally hilariously misuse ??.

I also got a crash course in Japanese holidays ??. Tanabata was beautiful—tiny wishes hanging everywhere like Pinterest but meaningful ??. And Halloween? Absolute chaos in the best way ????. I loved introducing my traditions, but my students took the holiday and made it ten times cuter and ten times louder.

And the recommendations never end: places to travel ??, snacks to try ??, and from my older students, bands I mustlisten to ??. (Mrs. GREEN APPLE—consider me converted ??.) So yes, their English has improved this year… but my playlist, snack list, and Japanese vocabulary have absolutely exploded ??. I think that’s a win-win.
