Does music help you focus

Weekly Topic: Study Playlists: Does Music Help You Focus?

khanyi M

It depends on the person and the kind of music, but for many people, yes—music can help with focus.

For some, especially when doing repetitive or low-effort tasks (like studying notes, cleaning, or coding simple things), music can improve concentration and make the work feel less boring. Instrumental music, ambient sounds, or lo-fi beats tend to work best because they don’t compete with your brain’s language processing.

On the other hand, if you’re doing something that requires heavy thinking, reading, or writing, music—especially with lyrics—can actually distract you. Your brain ends up splitting attention between the words in the music and the task.

A few general patterns:

  • Instrumental / ambient music: often helps focus
  • Music with lyrics: can be distracting for complex tasks
  • Familiar music: less distracting than new songs
  • Silence: still best for deep concentration for many people
