Don't Study English Only When You Need It

Nenad S.

A lot of students come to me with a clear, urgent goal: an interview is coming up, and they need to be ready. That's exactly the right instinct. Interview prep is one of the highest-leverage things you can do with your English study time. A couple hours spent polishing your answer to "tell me about yourself," tightening your STAR stories, or practicing how to talk about a failure without sounding defensive can genuinely change the outcome of that one conversation. It's targeted, it's high-stakes, and it pays off fast.

But here's the pattern I keep seeing: once the interview is booked, English study becomes 100% about the interview. Every lesson is scripted answers, every practice session is the same five predictable questions. Then the interview happens - "good or bad" and English study stops completely. Weeks or months later, another need shows up (a promotion panel, a client call, a conference), and the student is starting almost from zero again, relearning fluency they let go quiet.

Interview prep is a sprint. Fluency is the track you're sprinting on. If the track itself is in poor shape such as rusty grammar, hesitant speech, a small working vocabulary, no amount of memorized answers will make you sound natural under pressure. Interviewers notice the difference between someone reciting a rehearsed answer and someone who can think and react in English in real time. That reactive, in-the-moment fluency only comes from regular, ongoing use, conversations that aren't about anything in particular, just keeping the language "on."

So the real strategy isn't "study English when I need it." It's: maintain a steady baseline of general English all the time, and layer targeted, intensive prep on top of it when something specific comes up. The baseline is what lets the targeted prep actually work -

you're polishing a skill that's already warm, not trying to build it from scratch under time pressure.

If you have an interview or a big presentation coming up, let's absolutely prepare hard for it. But don't let your English go quiet again once it's over.
