Hello!
I’m Kumikitty, an online Japanese teacher.
I teach Japanese on Cafetalk, but I also teach online baking classes.
Recently, matcha sweets seem to have become very popular in France and Belgium, and more students from overseas have been joining my baking classes.
I thought it would be nice if I could communicate with them in French, even just a little, so I’m currently taking French lessons on Cafetalk.
However, French pronunciation is really difficult!
Sometimes, no matter how many times I practise, I still can’t pronounce the words correctly, and I start to feel discouraged.
There are even days when I think, “I don’t want to study anymore!”
When that happens, I make one of my favourite French pastries.
While I’m baking, I remember my dream: “Someday, if the yen becomes stronger and I can travel to France, I’d love to speak with the local people in French.”
Then, strangely enough, my motivation suddenly comes back, and I think, “Yes, I really do want to study French!”
Perhaps those of you studying Japanese sometimes feel the same way.
There are so many things to remember—hiragana, katakana, kanji—and you may think, “Japanese is just too difficult!”
Or perhaps the Japanese you hear in real conversations sounds completely different from what you learned in your textbook, and you think, “That expression wasn’t in my book!”(笑)
At times like these, I don’t think you need to force yourself to sit at your desk and study.
You could enjoy some delicious Japanese food, watch your favourite anime, read manga, or listen to Japanese music.
Why not step away from studying for a little while and simply enjoy Japanese culture?
If you remember what first inspired you to study Japanese or think about something you would love to do using Japanese, your motivation may gradually return.
When you don’t feel like studying, instead of forcing yourself to work harder, try reconnecting with something you love.
I’ll also keep studying French while enjoying making French pastries!
