It's Time for Halloween!

Ann K

Have you ever wondered about the iconic holiday of Halloween?  America is known for this holiday, but did you know that it has its roots in Britain and Ireland? The ancient Celts in Scotland and Ireland celebrated a holiday called Samhain, which marked the change of seasons.  They believed that at that time the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead was at its weakest (and that the dead might return). The performed special rituals to pacify the spirits. When they immigrated to America in great numbers in the 19th century, they brought the tradition with them.

In America, Halloween is celebrated on October 31st mainly by children (but also by adults).  Children dress up in costumes and travel from house to house seeking candy while adults attend costume parties.  What you may not know is that Halloween also became a religious holiday.  It is formally called "All Hallows Eve" because it precedes (and is part of) the Christian holiday of All Saints Day (November 1st).

If you would like to learn more about Halloween, why not take a class with me about this autumn holiday?
