What inspires me about Malala isn't just how brave she was when she used her voice at such a young age to advocate for other girls and their right to an education. It is that she continued to be an activist even after she was shot in the head and left for dead.
Because she had been such an important voice in her country, she was flown from Pakistan to the UK by the UAE and given medical care there. She survived, and although she had to face all the difficulties of living in a new country—getting used to an extremely different climate and culture—she didn't stop being a voice for change.
As an activist, she has worked tirelessly to ensure that more girls in the future will get an education.
First, she co-founded the Malala Fund with her father at age 15. Then, on her 16th birthday, she addressed the UN and stated, "One child, one teacher, one book, and one pen can change the world."
By the time she was 17, she had become the youngest-ever Nobel Prize winner.
She graduated from Oxford University in 2020 with a degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, but what really stands out as inspirational for me are her core values.
On the Malala Fund website, they talk about having ambitious goals, being brave, and making world leaders accountable. It says, "We seek and amplify diverse perspectives," and that they aim to give all girls at least 12 years of education. They talk about the number of girls who drop out of education because of child marriage and climate change. They try to think creatively and act with integrity. These might all sound like buzzwords, but when you look at the activities of the Malala Fund and when you look at how Malala has grown up, adapted her approach, and learned from her new world knowledge, you can really see that she is fearless and she truly wants all girls to get an education and be independent.
She encourages girls to be resilient against trauma. She's known for saying that she doesn't hate the man who shot her, suggesting that we fight systematically with fierce compassion and not vengeance. She is unapologetically ambitious. She's now in her late 20s, and she's been a world leader since she was 23.
