English follows below

Hello everyone! I’m Ha_na, a Japanese language teacher.

Have you ever studied Japanese and thought, "I understand the words, but I don't know how the other person really feels..."?

Take a conversation like this, for example:

Person A: "Do you want to go out for food today?"

Person B: "I really want to, but work came up today, so it might be tough... I'm sorry!"

Here, Person B uses the phrase "厳しいかも" (it might be tough / maybe difficult).

Non-native speakers might hope, "Oh, so maybe they can still make it?"

However, to a native Japanese speaker, this actually means 100% "I can't go" (No).

◆ Why don't Japanese people say "No" directly?

Japanese culture values harmony (協調性) and reading between the lines (察する文化) to avoid hurting the other person's feelings. Rather than rejecting an invitation directly with "I can't go," softening the response with "it might be tough" shows consideration for the other person.

In other words, learning Japanese also means learning about Japanese culture and the spirit of caring for others. That's why relying solely on textbook study often leaves learners confused in real-life conversations!

◆ Learn "Real Japanese" not found in textbooks!

In my lessons, I don't just teach grammar and vocabulary—I also share these kinds of nuances that native Japanese speakers actually use, tailored to your requests.

  • "I want to talk more naturally with my Japanese friends!"

  • "I want to understand what people really mean (the subtle nuances)!"

If that sounds like you, please come check out my trial lesson! Let’s experience the fun of learning Japanese together!

If you'd like any adjustments to the tone (e.g., more formal or more casual), let me know!
