Work on English pronunciation with exercises and simple conversation.
Description
The sounds of English are usually quite different from those in languages in other parts of the world. English pronunciation is also difficult because a word’s spelling often does not show how to pronounce it exactly. In this lesson, we’ll practise your English pronunciation by reviewing sounds that many ESL learners find hard, and going through pronunciation exercises of common English words. We’ll then do some conversation practice using those words, so you’ll get many opportunities to pronounce them in the middle of a sentence.
Some sample pronunciation practice topics include:
- The l- and r-sounds: alone or combined in words like curl.
- The th-sounds in words like thing and scathe.
- Consonant clusters in words like spread, sixth and rhythm.
- Words with irregular spellings and silent letters, like debt, island and subtle.
- Correct stress in words, including related nouns and verbs that have the same spelling but different stress patterns, like import (im-port vs im-port).
- Intonation in questions.
- ‘False Friends’: Words that look similar or sound the same but have different meanings, like bass and base.
