Brief introduction to the lesson:
 
We look at the importance of perseverance. We learn that when life knocks you down, the best thing to do is to get up every time you get knocked down. We learn how to read an authentic text and how to extrapulate the meaning. We learn vocabulary pertaining to perseverance.

Learning intentions of the lesson

Knowledge

At the end of the lesson, the student will:

    be able to use new vocabulary, e.g. prospects, formal, ancient, eligible, deprived.
    have learned about other countries and value systems, i.e. India.
    be familiar with themes such as marriage prospects, recruitment and contentment.


Skills

 
The student will be able to:

 
    answer open-ended questions on a reading passage
    extrapolate the meaning from a text even though they may be unfamiliar with some words or concepts
    deduce the meaning of unknown words by looking at the text
    compare the author’s view to their own and evaluate whether they agree or not

 
Language skills

·       learn the relative vocabulary

·       Learn how to extrapolate meaning without knowing all the words

·       Practise reported speech

 

Procedure

 
Introduction of the lesson topic                                                        (five minutes)

 
I show a cartoon of a learner not wanting to learn. I ask the student to comment on the cartoon.

We talk about the importance of schools and why we learn. We discuss exams.

 

Activity 1: (Explanation of new subject matter).                                 (five minutes)

 

I teach the new words, prospects, deprived and contented, by placing the words in context. We put the words in sentences. I explain how to successfully answer comprehension questions. For example, read the question twice. Look for key words in the text and write as many facts down as the marks that are awarded.

 

Activity 2                                                                                         (five minutes)

 

We view a slideshow on India. How do student’s views differ from the slideshow? Discuss.

 

Activity 3                                                                                         (five minutes)

 

Skim through the text and highlight keywords. Explain why you chose these words. Talk about what makes good keywords.

 

Activity 4                                                                                         (fifteen minutes)

 

In depth reading. Read through the text two times and answer the questions. Check our answers and spelling. How did your view of the story change after the second and third reading?

 

Activity 5                                                                                         (10 minutes)


Comprehensive recapitulating activity and evaluation: Student speculates on Mr Jatev’s future. We discuss his character and the importance of perseverance. We say goodbye.
