High-End English Conversation
Language, History, Literature, Culture
Kursinhalt
This is a lesson programme for advanced English speakers hoping to increase their cultural capital with a thorough knowledge of English literature, history, and culture. We can focus on either Britain or America, depending on the preferences of the student.
Lessons can be tailored to the interests of each individual learner, whether such interests lie in art, history, or philosophy. For each student, a core text will be chosen for study - for example, an extract from one of Shakespeare's plays, a poem by Keats, or a painting by Turner. I will then use this text as the basis for a guided discussion that could include artistic techniques, cultural mores, popular motifs and references, et cetera.
We will take breaks to discuss vocabulary and grammar points. I am used to teaching young students as well as adults, so I can adapt my use of English to different skill levels if required.
Having studied for my degree at Oxford, I tend to teach in quite an intense, enthusiastic manner. Students may wish to consult some of the following texts for discussion in these lessons, or they can bring me material written in English that they have found on their own:
John Keats, 'Ode to a Nightengale'
