Describing People, Places, and Emotions
Help the student expand their vocabulary and improve their ability to describe people, places, and emotions naturally in conversation and writing.
Detalles de la lección
. Warm-Up (5 min) – Quick Descriptions Game
- Ask: “How would you describe your best friend in three words?”
- Ask: “How would you describe your favorite place to relax?”
- Introduce the concept of adjective categories:
- People (e.g., kind, ambitious, outgoing)
- Places (e.g., cozy, crowded, peaceful)
- Emotions (e.g., excited, frustrated, relieved)
2. Mini Vocabulary Challenge (5 min)
- Give the student a list of common adjectives and have them find a stronger or more specific synonym (e.g., happy → cheerful, ecstatic, content).
- Introduce descriptive phrases instead of single words (e.g., “She has a warm, welcoming smile” instead of “She’s nice”).
3. Guided Speaking Practice (5 min) – "Guess Who?"
- Have the student describe a famous person (or character from a book/movie) without saying their name.
- You guess who it is!
- Then switch roles—you describe, and they guess.
4. Quick Writing Task (5 min) – "Picture Description"
- Show them a photo or illustration of a place or person (or let them imagine one).
- Ask them to write 3-5 descriptive sentences about it, using rich vocabulary.
- Example: Instead of "The beach is nice," encourage:
- "The golden sand stretches for miles, and the waves crash against the shore in a rhythmic dance."
5. Wrap-Up & Review (5 min) – Adjective Challenge
- Give them three random adjectives and challenge them to make a sentence using all three.
- Example words: mysterious, ancient, breathtaking
- Sentence: "The mysterious castle stood on an ancient hill, offering a breathtaking view of the valley below."
- Reflect: “What new words did you learn today?”
