If you'never failed you'll never succeed

Kursinhalt

The title of the lesson is Why failure is good for You and is based on the movie The pursuit of Happyness featuring Will Smith as the lead actor. The first two slides show screengrabs of Will Smith and his son as they're protrayed in the movie. The aim of these images are to provoke the students to start talking about what they see. They are encouraged to say or write down what they think. This will give me an opportunity to correct their grammar or share praise if there's nothing to correct.

Next, I give them an article to read which is a summary of The pursuit of Happyness. But before they get to the article, I share a set 6 questions with them. I read through the questions once and ask them to repeat after me. After they've repeated the questions we'll proceed to the article. The purpose of this section is comprehension, but with a special focus to look for the answers to the questions as they're silently reading the article.

Next, I ask them the questions and they have to provide the answers. After they've answered the questions, I ask them to read the summary out loud. This is to test their pronunciation. If there's anything to correct, I'll correct it. I'll also ask them to point out unfamiliar words whose meaning I'll be happy to explain to them. This section will look at pronunciation and vocabulary.

The nex slide features a 2 minute clip of the final scene of the movie that shows Will Smith's emotional reaction after being told that he got the job. After the students watched this scene we have a short discussion where I ask them their opinion after watching the clip as well as everything else they've learned during their lesson. Do they agree that failure is an essential part of success or do they have a different opinion?

In all my lessons I try to not only teach English but to also empower, motivate and inspire my students. I have a relaxed and flexible teaching style which is based around the needs of my students.
