Grammar (Pre-Intermediate)

Warmer: I shall start this lesson with a nice introductory exercise based around the past simple. This exercise is a mix and match exercise with two columns. On the one side, there will be present simple verbs and on the other side will be past simple verbs. These verbs will be irregular. The student would have to match up the present simple verbs with their past simple forms. The warmer will last about 5 mins. It is a good exrcise to test the student's understanding and prior knowledge of this grammar point.
Presentation: I will present the Past Simple to the student. Here I will introduce a certain amount of rules associated with this grammar point. The amount of rules will depend on the student's level of English. For instance, if I was teaching a Pre-Intermediate student, I would introduce 3-4 rules for this student. With each rule, I would give three example sentences to help the student gain an understanding of this grammar form. I would also answer any questions the student may have at this point. This presentation would last somewhere between 10-15 mins.
Production: I will give the student two exercises here based on the Past Simple. Each exercise will contain ten questions. I will start by giving the student exercise A. This will be a gap filled exercise where the student will answer past simple questions by putting in the correct regular or irregular form of the verb. Once this is done, I will go through the answers and dealing with any concerns the student may have. The second exercise will be a short story with the past forms missing. The student will be given the present form and they must come up with the correct past form. Again, I will answer any doubts the student may have here as I go through the answers. I will also correct pronunciation throughtout this stage. This part of the lesson should last around 20 mins.
Practice: This will be a speaking exercise which will allow the student the chance to use some past simple verbs. The speaking questions that will be asked here will be based on the student's level. I will ask around 5-10 questions in order to get the student speaking. I will also expand upon these questions by being inquisitive especially if the student is quiet. I will also correct pronunciation errors at the end of this stage. Again this stage will last 15 mins.
Cooler: I will go through a range of verbs and I will ask the student if these are regular or irregular. The student will also give the past simple forms of these verbs. This will give me an idea of what the student learned throughout the lesson. This will last 5 mins.
