Kursinhalt

At an advanced level, Latin becomes more than a language—it transforms into a key that opens the treasures of one of the most influential literatures in the world. This course is designed for students who already have solid knowledge of Latin grammar and syntax and are ready to immerse themselves in the richness of Roman literary texts.

The focus is not only on translation but also on literary interpretation, allowing you to explore the stylistic beauty, rhetorical devices, and cultural depth of the works. Reading authors such as Virgil, Horace, Cicero, Seneca, Tacitus, and Ovid, you will engage with timeless themes like politics, philosophy, love, myth, and the human condition, while refining your linguistic skills.

In this course, you will:

  • Deepen your understanding of complex grammatical structures (indirect speech, ablative absolute, subjunctive clauses, rhetorical figures)

  • Practice advanced translation techniques, aiming for accuracy while capturing the elegance and nuance of the original text

  • Analyze stylistic and rhetorical devices, discovering how Roman authors crafted their works to persuade, inspire, or move their audiences

  • Discuss the historical, cultural, and philosophical context behind each passage, linking the texts to Roman society and to their influence on later European thought

  • Develop critical skills to read Latin as a language of ideas, not just as an academic exercise

Format:
Each session (60 minutes) includes:

  • Close reading and translation of selected literary passages (prose and poetry)

  • Guided discussion on style, themes, and interpretation

  • Exercises to refine translation precision and sensitivity to the author’s voice

  • Insights into intertextuality and influence: how Roman texts shaped medieval and modern literature

  • Opportunities to practice oral reading and scansion for poetic works, to fully appreciate the rhythm and sound of Latin verse

By the end of this course, you will not only master the complexities of advanced Latin grammar and syntax—you will also be able to experience Latin literature as living texts, capable of speaking across centuries. You’ll develop the skills to appreciate the artistry of Roman authors and to see how their voices continue to resonate in today’s languages, cultures, and ideas.

This lesson is taught by a certified Italian teacher with over 6 years of experience in public schools and private tutoring.

Cancellation of pack lessons

• 'Unstarted' lesson packs(1) can be cancelled any time. Used Points will be completely refunded. If a 'started' lesson pack(2) is cancelled, you will be refunded 50% of the price of the remaining lessons provided that the lessons are unrequested, unconfirmed or not within 24 hours of their scheduled start times.
(1) A lesson pack for which none of the requests have been confirmed by the tutor.
(2) A lesson pack with at least one confirmed request. (By confirming the date and time for the first lesson in the pack the tutor confirms the pack as a whole and coupons are automatically issued)

Cancelling individual requests in a pack

• If you wish to cancel a single lesson that belongs to a pack but not the whole pack, you can do so via the request page. In this case, the coupon used to book the lesson will either be refunded or collected, based on the tutors single-lesson cancellation policy. Please note that any 50% partial refunds in the tutors single-lesson cancellation policy do not apply to lesson packs and the tutor may choose to either refund or collect the coupon in those cases.
