Vocabulary class focusing on idiomatic English. We study light-hearted news items from a British tabloid newspaper. For Upper-Intermediate and Advanced students.
Description
In the United Kingdom there are two types of newspaper: the broadsheet and the tabloid. Originally, the terms 'broadsheet' and 'tabloid' referred to the size of the newspaper, nowadays they refer to the style and substance of the newspaper. Broadsheets tend to be characterised as cerebral newspapers, reporting serious issues and providing sober analysis whilst tabloids favour sensationalist stories, weird news and celebrity gossip.
Sometimes teachers and students will make the mistake of thinking that because tabloids aren't intellectual they're of no use for improving one's English. But in fact, tabloids - also known as red-tops - are a rich source of idiomatic phrases and colloquial expressions. For that reason they are ideal for Advanced students who want informal and very interesting English.
This class is designed to improve your vocabulary, grammar, reading and speaking while enjoying silly news articles. Each lesson will be at a comfortable pace with no pressure to finish an article within the 50 minutes - the emphasis is on you enjoying yourself, enhancing your English and getting plenty of speaking practice. For Upper-Intermediate and Advanced students.
