This lesson is for intermediate to advanced learners, uses the Audio-Lingual and Direct Methods, and follows the Present, Practice, Produce format.
Stage Aim 1:
Introduction—the teacher greets the student and vice versa. The teacher and the student introduce themselves to each other. The teacher opens up his PowerPoint presentation.
Stage Aim 2:
The teacher introduces the topic of the day’s lesson: verbs. The teacher elicits the student’s understanding of what a verb is and provides a definition of the term verb if necessary.
Stage Aim 3:
The teacher explains the types of verbs that exist in English: dynamic or stative and transitive or intransitive.
Dynamic verbs indicate action. Stative verbs show a either link, a condition or state, or possession.
Transitive verbs take an object and intransitive verbs do not take an object. Only dynamic verbs can be transitive by definition.
The teacher explains the concept of a grammatical object in English.
The teacher explains the importance of word order when using verbs.
Stage Aim 4:
The teacher provides a chart illustrating the difference between dynamic and stative as well as transitive verbs and intransitive verbs. The student will read the chart out loud.
Stage Aim 5:
The teacher will show a list of thirty to forty verbs in the PowerPoint presentation. The teacher will instruct the student to indicate whether the verb is dynamic or stative and if it is transitive or intransitive.
Stage Aim 6:
The student will be given a picture to describe. For each sentence that the student uses to describe the picture, he or she must explain whether the verb employed in each sentence is dynamic or stative and transitive or intransitive.
Stage Aim 7:
The teacher will give the student several paragraphs from different texts. The student must identify all the dynamic and stative verbs in each paragraph and whether the verbs are transitive or intransitive.
Stage Aim 8:
The teacher asks the student concept check questions to verify that the student understood the content of the day’s lesson. The teacher assigns homework and checks to see if the student understands the instructions for the homework.
