A Traditional British Summer
For students who want to learn about traditional British culture during the summer months, especially if you plan to visit
Kursinhalt
British people love to complain about their famously gloomy weather. It is a major source of conversation all year round and sometimes it seems there are more descriptions of rain than there are days in a year! So when Summer comes around there is a whole series of "must do" traditions that many British people like to do. So if you really want to get a good understanding of British culture, join this fun and relaxing class, full of information about what to do and where to go if you are visiting in Summer or just want to understand the British better.
We will cover everything from Picnics to Punting, and the Silly Season to Street Parties. The class proceeds in 6 steps.
1. The teacher will supply the student with an article about British Summer events before the lesson. It will take you about 20-30 minutes to read. Don't worry if you don't understand it all.
2. The teacher starts by asking the student if they understand a set of 10-15 unusual words in the article. After explanation of the words, the student will be helped to pronounce these words correctly
3. The student then chooses one of the ten passages to read aloud, after which the teacher corrects any pronunciation issues and asks questions about their comprehension of the passage they have read
4. This is followed by a general discussion on the passage, with either the student or the teacher bringing in related issues as appropriate. If there is time, step 3 and 4 will be repeated for a second passage
5. Wrap up - new vocabulary learned, grammar or pronunciation issues identified
6. Homework - practice having a conversation on this topic or topics with friends and/or colleagues
The benefits of this class are as follows:
1. It is a structured approach where the student can think about the article before the lesson and come prepared to read and discuss one or two of them
2. The student can learn new vocabulary and have their pronunciation or grammar corrected
3. The student can gain confidence in talking about typical British Summer cultural events
4. The lesson can be repeated choosing different passages each time
My teaching style is calm, friendly and non-judgemental but I am prepared to challenge a student to go further, particularly if the topic requires the student to have an opinion
