English Comprehension- How well do you speak, read, write and understand the language?
Tailoring the lessons to your English needs

Topic: Assessing our adequacies in the Engish Language and improving on the inadequacies
Sub-topic: English comprehension
Purpose of lesson: This will be the first lesson with the student. It is fashioned to identify the proficiency level of the student in order to tailor subsequent lessons to their needs. It is recommended that subsequent lessons are scheduled after this one to address the inadequacies.
Methodology:
- Short interesting essays, cutting across societal issues, technology, diverse cultures, soccer and so on will be provided to the students.
- Students will be asked to read it to my hearing. I will note down on how words are pronounced and the flow of the reading. This will test their reading skills. It is fine if students can not read at all.
- When the student is done, I will read it again to their hearing. I will ask them to summaeize the essay in their own words or say what they heard from the reading. I will assess tteir listening and understanding skills by doing this.
- There will be questions relating to the essay after reading it. Students will be asked to read questions and answer them verbally.Discussion of the answers will let me know their speaking abilities
- The same questions will be given to them as an assignment to write down the answers. They will be encouraged to write it by themselves witout help from any source; and also let me know if they can not do it at all.
Assessment:
- Assuning a student is found to understand spoken English and able to express themselves fairly, but can not read or write, such student will be scored as a beginner.
- Subsequent lessons will be focussed on learning the English alphabets, their phonetics and puting them into short syllabled words.
- It will be followed by learning to pronounce bigger words by breaking them into syllables. If it is a new word to the student, the meaning of the word will be discussed.
- It will be followed by larning how to read and write short sentences.
Once the reading purpose is achieved, the next lessons will focus on expressions. Spoken language should follow the right tenses.
- Student will be taught about matching right subjects with the right verbs. Example: "I eat", "He/She eats", "It eats", "They eat".
- It will be followed by time tenses: present tense, past tense, present continous tense, past participle tense and so on
- It will be follwed by parts of speech : nouns, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs.
Based on the assessment a student gets, recommendations will be made by the tutor on the course structure
