Class Description.
Learn about our complicated world using only simple words. Use your ‘thinking bag’ [brain] to learn about big ideas and complex things using basic English vocabulary - the kind you use in everyday conversation.
We'll read sections from the book "Thing Explainer" by Randall Munroe. He describes technical concepts like cells, space rovers, helicopters and more without using technical words. Instead he uses creative simple terms like "tiny bags of water inside you" for animal cells or "red world space car" for the Mars rover.
The goal of each class is to unlock science, nature, technology and more by using the idea of ELI5 (Explain Like I’m 5). There are 30 different topics in all, what would you like to know about?
Do you only need 1000 English words to describe the whole world?
Learn the parts of a ‘sky boat with wings’ [helicopter]; think about the role of the ‘fire water carrier’ in a ‘fire box’ [engine]; and read about the ‘quiet night catcher’ [what do you think this is?*] sitting in the tree.
This class will grow your vocabulary and ability to discuss technical topics in plain-spoken ways. Come and explore the world in 1000 words!

1. Practice explaining technical topics without relying on specialized terminology.
2. Build vocabulary by learning creative descriptive phrases for complex concepts.
3. Improve ability to discuss intricate systems and processes using only everyday words.
4. Discuss whether 1000 words is sufficient for explaining the whole world
5. Develop skills for unlocking understanding of complicated subject matter using basic terms.
