World News - Longer with Writing Practice
Learn to talk with confidence about events in the news and how to summarise an article by writing a few sentences in your own words
Kursinhalt
The class is aimed at interemdiate or advanced students who want to be able to have conversations on topics in the news as well as current affairs. It also aims to teach students how to make short summaries in their own words. This is helpful for people aiming to improve their English speaking and writing skills, whilst at the same time having the confidence to speak to friends or work colleagues about what is happening in the world around them. The class proceeds in 6 steps.
1. The student supplies the teacher with a short passage on a current topic, preferably before the lesson. It should take about 5 minutes to read aloud. The student may request the teacher to provide a passage if preferred
2. The teacher starts by reading the passage aloud and asking the student if they have any questions on the passage (vocabularly they don't understand, pronunciation or grammar)
3. The student then reads the passage aloud, after which the teacher corrects any pronunciation issues and asks questions about their comprehension of the passage they have read
4. This is followed by a general discussion on the topic, with either the student or the teacher bringing in related issues as appropriate.
5. The student is then given a few minutes to write a short summary of the article in their own words. The teacher will help to correct and improve the summary.
6. Wrap up - new vocabulary learned, grammar or pronunciation issues identified
The benefits of this class are as follows:
1. It is a structured approach where the student can think about the topic before the lesson and come prepared
2. The student can learn new vocabulary and have their pronunciation or grammar corrected
3. The student will gain experience in writing short summaries of articles they have read or videos they have seen
4. The student can gain confidence in talking about topical issues
4. A student can choose a 25 minute version of the class without the writing practice, if they want to do a shorter passage and/or have a less detailed discussion on the topic
My teaching style is calm, friendly and non-judgemental but I am prepared to challenge a student to go further, particularly if the topic requires the student to have an opinion
