Practice presentation skills by telling & describing an item or object you have.

Kursinhalt

Have you ever done a show & tell? You probably have without realizing!

Any time you share something new with your friends, you're doing a show & tell!

The main points of this lesson are:
  • practice basic presentation skills
  • describing objects and/or events with detail
  • answering open-ended questions (the 5Ws and H Questions: Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?)

Please pick at least 1 object, photo from an event, or something else that you can explain for 5-7 minutes. You can prepare a script or a list of list of points to cover about your thing. Please have your thing on hand to show me as part of the presentation.

Here is an example that answers the 5Ws and H questions with a lot of detail:

This photo is from the winter of 2019, after a koto performance that my friends & I had just finished. We were goofing off and taking silly photos after watching some other performances. I've drawn a little face over their own to protect their privacy.

At the time, we were all learning very basic koto skills. The goal was to introduce non-Japanese people to different aspects of Japanese culture. Once or twice a month, we would gather at a local town's cultural center & practice with donated koto in a designated tatami room. As such, we all got used to walking around the building in our socks!

Because we were new to the instrument, and did not have much time with our teacher to practice, we performed the simplest part of Sakura in unison. Despite only having around 5 total hours of practice time, we did okay!

That past summer, my mother and I had traveled around Kyoto & Osaka. When we were wandering, we stumbled across a second-hand kimono shop. Since we both enjoy sewing & reusing materials, we stopped by. My mother had an idea for a quilt using yukata, as most western quilts are made with cottons. I, on the other hand, love silk even if it's difficult to sew well.

When looked around, I immediately fell in love with this furisode kimono. The seller told me it was not in style, but I still loved it. I thought the color scheme looked good on me; my hair is reddish and I think my skin tone goes well with greens. If I remember correctly, I got the kimono for around 6,000 yen! I thought it was a steal.

I had help putting on the kimono for the event, as did my friends. Since I can only put on a yukata & I'm married, the kimono now hangs on my wall as decoration.
