Description:
This lesson focuses on improving children’s reading skills through engaging activities that enhance vocabulary, decoding, fluency, and comprehension. Students will interact with texts, pictures, and labels to strengthen recognition of words and practice reading aloud confidently.

Learning Activities with Challenges & Solutions

  1. Picture Books – “Match & Talk”

    • Activity: Show a picture book. Ask students to match images to words or discuss what they see happening in the story.

    • Challenge: Children may rely only on pictures and not try reading.

    • Solution: Encourage sounding out simple words, point to text as you read, and ask “Can you try saying this word?”

  2. Sight Words Practice – “Find & Read”

    • Activity: Practice common sight words using flashcards, games, or classroom posters.

    • Challenge: Students may forget words or confuse similar-looking words.

    • Solution: Repeat words frequently, use multi-sensory activities (write in sand, trace letters, act out words).

  3. Mini Reading Comprehension – “Read & Answer”

    • Activity: Read a short passage and ask 2–4 comprehension questions (e.g., “Who is in the story?”, “What happened first?”).

    • Challenge: Students may not remember details or answer in full sentences.

    • Solution: Use picture cues, model answers, and ask guiding questions to support understanding.

  4. Labeling – “Word Around Us”

    • Activity: Label classroom items, toys, or pictures with words. Students read labels and match them to objects.

    • Challenge: Students may confuse similar items or ignore labels.

    • Solution: Make it a game, repeat the words aloud, and have students point to or touch items while reading.

  5. Reading Aloud – “Take the Mic”

    • Activity: Students read short sentences or passages aloud. Focus on pronunciation, intonation, and fluency.

    • Challenge: Some students may be shy or mispronounce words.

    • Solution: Model reading first, break words into syllables, allow group reading before individual reading, and praise all attempts.
