This lesson is designed for intermediate or advanced students, uses the Direct and Audio-Lingual Methods, and is in the Present, Practice, Produce format.
Stage Aim 1:
Introduction—The student and the teacher greet each other. They introduce themselves to each other if they are meeting for the first time.
Stage Aim 2:
The teacher opens his PowerPoint presentation and introduces the topic for the day: an overview of the parts of speech and sentence construction in English.
Stage Aim 3:
The teacher elicits the meaning of the term part of speech from the student. The teacher explains the concept if necessary. A part of speech is a category of word with a specific meaning or meanings and grammatical function in a sentence.
The teacher provides examples of the different parts of speech:
Nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions, determiners, and interjections.
The teacher elicits the meaning of each part of speech and provides definitions for all the parts of speech the student does not know in English.
The teacher explains the importance of word order in English. Word order in English is strict. The teacher presents the rules for word order in sentences in English.
The teacher asks the student concept check questions before moving to the next part of the lesson.
Stage Aim 4:
The teacher will provide ten example sentences in the PowerPoint presentation. The student will read each sentence and indicate the part of speech of each word in the sentence. The teacher will verify the student’s answers.
Stage Aim 5:
The teacher will show the student a series of pictures. The student will have to describe each picture in a sentence and then indicate the part of speech for each word he or she used in each sentence.
Stage Aim 6:
The teacher will play a audio recording of a person reading six different sentences in English. The student will write down each sentence and then indicate the part of speech for each word in the sentence.
Stage Aim 7:
The teacher will provide a text with certain words are omitted. The student must fill in the blank and indicate the part of speech of the word that was missing.
Stage Aim 8:
The teacher will provide the student with a short paragraph from a text that was written online. For each sentence, the student must indicate which word or group of words constitute the subject, the verb, the direct object, the indirect object, or the object complement of the sentence.
Stage Aim 9:
The teacher wraps up the lesson and asks the student concept check questions about the content of the day’s lesson and the instructions for the homework assigned at the end of today’s lesson.
