When should I use it, and why do many writing teachers tell students to avoid it?
Description
Many English teachers draw red lines through sentences in the passive voice, and even Microsoft Word often urges writers to consider revising passive sentences. What is so bad about the passive voice? Answer: Nothing! The ways in which people, including many native speakers, use and abuse the passive voice seems to have frustrated some teachers to the point that they find it easier to say, "Don't use the passive voice!" than to explain when the passive voice is appropriate.
In this lesson, we will talk about why the passive voice is so good in some situations but so bad in others. We will practice evaluating uses of the passive, constructing passive sentences, and revising sentences that would benefit from a change of voice.
This lesson should be especially useful for students of 中3英語 studying the passive voice and for any advanced students looking to improve their writing style. As always, I will provide reference and practice materials.

Note: If you want more practice with this topic, you can take the lesson more than once and request sessions that focus more on conversation with the concept, more on listening, or more on whichever aspect of the concept you want to practice. In other words, anyone trying the lesson more than once will get new material that emphasizes whatever he or she requests.
