Hello! My name is Paul, and I am a language enthusiast lucky enough to have made a 10-year career of sharing my passion for English, Spanish, Japanese, and other languages with thousands of wonderful students. In addition to having extensive university and college-level experience teaching language, I have also served as private guitar, English, and Spanish tutor and a Spanish translator and interpreter; while I have played guitar professionally and semi-professionally as a sidejob in a number of settings and styles, I specialize in fingerstyle acoustic guitar and love arranging jazz and blues songs for solo guitar, playing and teaching traditional acoustic blues and folk, and sharing my knowledge of music theory with others.
Throughout my adult life, I have never stopped studying languages because I love learning them, enjoy connecting more closely to other cultures, and find that studying languages helps me understand what my students are experiencing in their English-learning journeys. Even though my formal training is in Spanish (undergraduate degree) and English (undergraduate and graduate degrees), I am also a Japanese enthusiast who has worked with hundreds of members of our local Japanese community, spent thousands of hours polishing my Japanese-language skills with patient and kind native speakers, and always deeply admired Japan's remarkable culture, language, and people.
I pride myself on my ability to explain complex grammatical, stylistic, and rhetorical concepts in a way that "connects the dots" between such concepts, clarifies why they are important, and shows how understanding them can improve students' ability to communicate effectively. Studying several foreign languages has also helped me see more clearly what makes English different from other languages and which of its features tend to make it difficult for native speakers of various languages.
For me, language and learning are fun, and I truly believe that you will learn quickly and comfortably if you give me the opportunity to share my enthusiasm and knowledge with you.
