Objective: To understand and practice the phonetic differences between /t/, /d/, and /th/ sounds in English.
Lesson Plan:
1. Introduction (10 Mins)
Introduce the topic and activate prior knowledge of sounds.
Explanation:
/t/ (as in "top") is an unvoiced stop sound produced by briefly stopping the airflow with the tongue against the roof of the mouth, then releasing it quickly.
/d/ (as in "dog") is a voiced stop sound, produced the same way as /t/, but with the vocal cords vibrating.
/th/ (as in "think") is an unvoiced fricative sound where the tongue is placed between the teeth, and air is forced through.
Demonstration and Practice:
Examples - "top" vs "dog", "tip" vs "dip", "think" vs "sink".
Have students repeat after you, focusing on differentiating the sounds.
Activity: Play a short listening exercise where students identify the sound they hear.
2. Individual Practice (7-10 minutes):
Give words and let students practice by themselves
Practice with Sentences: practice pronunciation in full sentences to reinforce the target sounds.
3. Guided Practice (7 minutes)
Practice pronunciation together
Time for questions and corrections if needed
Have students repeat the sentences, first slowly, then at a more natural pace.
Encourage students to focus on the specific sounds they have learned.
4. Review (5 minutes):
Objective: Review the lesson and clarify any misunderstandings.
Review the key points of the lesson
Ask students to give examples of words with these sounds.
Provide a quick recap of the tongue placement for each sound.
Assign a brief homework exercise where students find more examples of minimal pairs and practice pronunciation.
